President’s Message – November 2020

SABA Logo

Recently SABA membership met and elected new officers:

President:  Noel Turner

Vice President: Rod Fortney

Secretary: Peter Muller

Treasurer: Fred Lewis and Jeannine Mazza

We look forward to working with membership to promote cycling in North Georgia and Western North Carolina.  Also, the club officers would like to extend their gratitude to Jeannine for her leadership and club guidance as president over the last two years.

SABA Updates:

Membership agreed to terminate the relationship with IMBA/SORBA, effective 12/31/20.  A cost analysis determined that affiliating with The League of American Bicyclist (LAB) would substantially reduce cost to SABA members and increase insurance coverage.   LAB has been promoting cycling across the country since 1880, representing  over  1,200 bike clubs including lobbying congress for funding and bike friendly policies  (see bikeleague.org for more detail).  The current dues of $39.00 would be reduced to $25.00 per member which will be effective upon individual renewals.

We are currently working on a number of projects. One in particular, is the Rails to Trails.  Check out the SABA website and contribute if you can.  We would like to be one of the lead activists and get involved with its development.  Work on the Jack Rabbit five mile trail expansion should begin this coming spring as well as the installation of a bike wash station.  Upgrades and trail expansion have also occurred at Piney Knob.

Future meetings and activities:  due to Covid-19 we have suspended in person group meetings and activities.  However, there will be announcements regarding future zoom meetings.

We encourage membership to reach out to the officers and let us know your thoughts and suggestions.

Hope to see all on the road and trails soon!

Noel
