The Trail Crew Leader training course is a two‐day course for any volunteer that wants to learn the basic technical trail work skills to lead a crew. It will cover natural surface trail design, construction, maintenance and crew leader training. The focus is long term sustainability that can reduce overall maintenance needs and user impacts on natural resources. Trail crew leaders should have a strong commitment to building sustainable trails and get satisfaction out of helping others have a good time while doing good work.
The Trail Crew Leader Training Course will be taught by Walt Bready, a former Georgia Trails Education Specialist and current principle of B Ready Trails. He has played a role in the design and construction of over 50 miles of singletrack in Tennessee, Georgia, North Carolina, Alabama and has taught trail crew leader and sustainability courses in the southeast since 2005. Walt is active with IMBA-SORBA and has been a member since 1996. He also worked for the Southeastern region of the International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA) serving in a field staff position for the Southern Off-Road Bicycle Association (SORBA). Walter is a native of Atlanta and now lives in Woodstock near the trails of Blankets Creek and Olde Rope Mill Park.
Walt will be teaching out of the IMBA book Trail Solutions, IMBA’s Guide to Building Sweet Singletrack. These books will be available for purchase at $40 each. The book is not required but is encouraged for participants to purchase. If a participant is interested they must let SABA know when registering for the class that they will want to purchase a book so we can have enough on hand at the class. The USFS Trail handbook will be available for free to each participant of the class.
Participants are recommended to wear long pants long sleeve shirts. All participants must bring their own safety gear, eye protection, leather gloves, hiking boots or work boots. All hand tools will be provided on site.
Registration is now open for anyone interested in the program –
